Milwaukee Irish Fest 2007: Cashel Dennehy School of Irish Dance; The Sandcarvers; Seanchai and the Unity Squad - Friday, August 17 : A beautiful Friday at the Lienie's Celtic Rock Stage! Too bad the next two days were hampered by torrential downpours and a throbbing sciatic nerve, but today was a blast. Getting things rolling was The Cashel Dennehy School of Irish Dance... cute kids and very talented, too. Next, perhaps the most talked about performance of the whole weekend, The Sandcarvers. The lads and lady literally tore the stage up... a smokin' performance, for sure. Finally, Seanchai and the Unity Squad, who made themselves a new fan in your humble shutterbug.
Many thanks to all the folks of Cashel Dennehy; A.J. Laird, Bryce Lehman, Chris Trotier, Jeff Miller, Raven & Tony Keller (The Sandcarvers); Chris Byrne, Rachel Fitzgerald, Jason Goodrow, Terry Wettmore & Andrew Harkin (Seanchai); Skip & Ryan (gear storage and access), Craig Downie (Enter the Haggis); Beth E. M.A.R.S. Fest 2007 : The First Inaugural M.A.R.S. Festival at The Miramar Theatre in Milwaukee WI. The gallery begins with some random candids before the show. Officially kicking off the days music were Orphonic Orchestra. Sean Gill and Brad Klotz from Strange Land performed on "the second stage" during the break. Next were Engine of Earth and Aziola Cry, two bands that I hadn't heard before but, man, am I glad I now have... they simply rocked! Sean Gill returned to the second stage for a lovely solo acoustic set. Then came Quark Quintet. Next was Strange Land. Julie Brandenburg and Eric Lundgren took the second stage during a quick dinner break. After dinner was the very ethereal and ambient Kurt Michaels. And then, it happened... my camera broke! ARRGH! Sadly, I wasn't able to capture the final three acts, Far Corner, Dimension X or Karcius, but they all kicked ass, believe me. An entire day of Prog at it's finest.
My deepest thanks to D.R. Burkowitz, Chad Novell and all the fabuluos artists for their graciousness and access... you all made this a very special day for me, despite the broken camera at the end.

Three Machine, Strange Land & Orphonic Orchestra: April 28, 2007 Vnuk's Lounge Cudahy WI : Vnuk's was the place to be if, like me, you are a fan of Progressive Rock. Kicking off this incredible night of music was Three Machine. An instrumental trio from Chicago, Three Machine laid down some very enjoyable riffs. As a newcomer to this band, they did nothing short of impress. Next was the one and only Strange Land. Chad, Brad and Sean were spot-on this night...probably the strongest set I've ever heard these guys play, and I've never heard them play a bad one! A few songs from their upcoming album were featured, and if tonight's performance was any indication, this is going to be an album to watch, for sure. I won't spill the beans, but there was a new song that they played that absolutely blew my mind. Wrapping up the evening was Orphonic Orchestra and, let me tell ya, when I hear influences of Ren, Celtic, Prog and Classical all rolled together, I go home a happy camper.
My thanks to Dave Vnuk and all the wonderful musicians who not only played their asses off but allowed your humble shutterbug to capture their evening and share it with you.

Redheaded Stepchild: March 1, 2007 Westville Pub Asheville NC : Day one of my trip down south with The Sandcarvers. Since Raven and I were hauling the gear, we stopped in Asheville NC for a bite and a nite before heading on to Savannah although, to my pleasure, it turned into a bite, a nite and a band. We stopped into the Westville Pub, had a great meal and were further treated to the wonderful American Roots sounds of Redheaded Stepchild. And when I say American roots, I'm talkin' true country and bluegrass here, folks. None of that "Pop-with-a-twang" for this band, no sir! This was truly a great way to start our trip and I sincerely thank both the Westville and Redheaded Stepchild for allowing me the priveledge of shooting.

Far Corner with Strange Land: Feb. 16, 2007 Shank Hall Milwaukee WI : When you're as big a "Prog-head" as I am, nights like this are truly special. Holy shite, what a night of music! First off was Strange Land, who not only played a lot of my old favorites, but also featured a couple of new ones from their forthcoming release, which definitely sounds tasty. A fine show as always, lads.

Next was Far Corner. As I've mentioned before, I haven't been this excited about a Prog band in a long time. This is without a doubt some of the most creative and challenging stuff I've heard in years. And a special night it was for them, as this was the CD release party for their new album, Endangered, which was featured throughout their set. After a night like this, I can't wait for the next time these two bands are hooking up, which just happens to be on May 19th in Lake Mills, WI. I'm psyched!
And on top of all that, Tom from The Pulltops was in the house...can it get any better?

My sincerest thanks to Chad, Sean and Brad from Strange Land and Dan, Angela, Bill and Craig from Far Corner for making this a memorable night for me. Oh, and a special shout out to Joe Kopecky for all the kind words of support...you rock, dude!

The Carl Palmer Band: Shank Hall - Milwaukee, WI : (2006-06-11 - Shank Hall) "Welcome Back My Friends to the Show Tha Never Ends...Ladies and Gentlemen, Carl Palmer!" Okay, so Keith and Greg couldn't make it, but it was indeed a "Celebration of the Music of Emerson, Lake and Palmer" as Carl Palmer (perhaps my favorite drummer of all time) and his band of extremely talented young turks blazed their way through songs from every era in the ELP catalogue. And not a keyboard to be found! Paul Bielatowicz (a 16 year old phenom on guitar) and Stuart Clayton on bass (now in my team picture of favorite bassists) handled all the keyboard parts flawlessly, at times playing both rhythm and melody keyboaed riffs on their own instruments at the same time. Positively amazing! A completley different take on classic ELP songs, which was very refreshing, indeed. It was truly an honor to be able to photograph not only a giant in the world of percussion/Prog, but also these two very talented young players. My thanks - first and foremost - to Mr. Carl Palmer; Bruce and Harry; Pete Jest, Dave and all the rest of the fine staff at Shank Hall.

Tempest: Ballydoyle Irish Pub, Downers Grove IL : (2006-03-25 Ballydoyle) Tempest continue on this leg of their current Double Cross 2006 tour with a stop in Downers Grove, IL at Ballydoyle. They're on the road in support of their brand new - and very tasty - album entitled Double Cross. This was a pretty special weekend for me. Of course, hanging with my lovely wife Raven and the rest of The Sandcarvers (who opened this and the previous show) is always a hoot, but one of the perks of working with them is the opportunity it affords me to meet other talented and great people. When they also happen to be one of my favorite bands, well, it's a double treat. It was really a privilege meeting Ronan, Michael, Adolfo, Lief and Ariane. Not only are they very grand and talented people, but they went out of their way to give me some really great shots and to make me feel at home, too. Steve Hackett - Milwaukee WI : (2005-10-18 Shank Hall) A pivotal member of Genesis from 1971 through 1977 (the band's most progressive and creative period,) Steve Hackett is, without a doubt, one of my all-time favorite guitarists. Expressive and subtle...complex and simple, this guy can do it all. I hadn't had a chance to hear Steve live since his last tour with Genesis in support of their "Wind & Wuthering" album, the last truly great Genesis album, in my opinion. What a double treat this was for me -- finally getting to see Steve live again after all these years and getting a chance to take photos as well (thanks Shank)! The evening consisted of two sets. First, solo Steve on nylon string classical guitar, during which he played almost an hour of music spanning his solo career, interspersed with snippets of some of his Genesis compositions. For the second set he was joined by his brother John Hackett on flute and Roger King on keyboards for what was a very Neoclassical, almost salon-esque set, which featured several pieces by French composer Erik Satie. My bride Raven had not seen Hackett before tonight but, being classically trained herself, she loved it as much as I did. A truly memorable evening with one of my guitar heroes. For some more Hackett pics from this show, please check my friend William D. Gagliani's gallery.
