Jammin' For the Arts at McAuliffe's Pub Sept. 29, 2007 Featuring Norm Pratt & Claire; Never Static; The Pulltops : Jammin' for the Arts is a city wide benefit in Racine WI. As described by the Racine Journal-Times:
[snip]
Proceeds from Jammin’ for the Arts will benefit children’s arts programs run by the four member groups of the Racine United Arts Fund — the Racine Arts Council (an umbrella organization for arts organizations in the community), the Racine Art Museum, the Racine Symphony Orchestra and the Racine Theatre Guild. The event, which originated as a Leadership Racine project three years ago, is now run by RUAF, as well as volunteers, such as J.J. McAuliffe, who books the bands.
“Last year we cleared $7,000 and this year we are hoping to raise that to $10,000,” said Nancy Moldenhauer, director of RUAF.
In years past, the money raised has helped fund things such as theater classes and a student performing company at the RTG; special concerts for children and educational performances in schools by the RSO; art classes and exhibit tours for children at the RAM and the RAC’s Lonely Instruments Need Kids program.
Those looking to help, can contribute to the Jammin’ for the Arts cause in one of two ways (or both).
Participants can either buy a $10 wristband, which will get them into all eight music venues throughout the night — or they can purchase food at one of the 15 participating restaurants that evening. A percentage of the restaurants’ take that night (all day long at Sugar Shack) will be donated to the cause.
Most music venues will feature several bands throughout the evening, and together the acts cover a wide range of musical styles including blues, alternative, acoustic, jazz and rock (classical, hard and rap-rock).
[snip]
Tonights performers at McAuliffe's Pub were: Norm Pratt & Claire; Never Static; The Pulltops and The Sandcarvers. No shots of The Sandcarvers tonight, as I decided to pack away the camera and actually enjoy watching and listening to them with my oldest son, Shaun.

The Elders with Special Guest Billy Orphan: May 18, 2007 McAuliffe's Pub Racine WI : Now this was fun! The Elders... Billy Orphan... The Tri-Festa gals... McAuliffe's Pub and hey, even members of The Sandcarvers were in the house! Does it get any better? I think not. Billy Orphan got things rolling as only he can. If you've yet to see him live, run, do not walk, to his next appearance. I promise you won't be disappointed. Wrapping up the evening were The Elders from Kansas City. Wow! I mean, WOW! Kicked up Celtic to the nth degree. I was an Elders virgin when I walked in and afterwards, I swear, I needed a cigarette! These guys rock and very nice blokes as well.
My thanks to JJ and all the fine staff at McAuliffe's; Billy Orphan; The Tri-Festas; John Bowles at PaddyRock; The Sandcarvers and of course, The Elders for all their graciousness and hospitality.

Oxygen with Towncrier and Five Man Trio : (2007-03-24) Another stellar night of music at McAuliffe's Pub. The evening started with Five Man Trio. I hadn't seen these guys in about three years. I'd forgotten how good they were then and man, they've just gotten better! Their songs and playing have really matured. Very nice, indeed.
Next was Towncrier from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A band that was new to my ears, Towncrier delivered some very tasty power-pop. Great songs, great playing and the stage presence of lead vocalist and keyboardist Jerry Lorenson was phenomenal. A true performer who knows how to interact with the audience. I will definitely be looking for these guys again in the future.
Capping off the evening was Nebraska's own Oxygen. Yet another band I was unfamiliar with before tonight and yet another I will be scoping out in the future. Finely crafted tunes, some hot guitar licks from Bryan Scherbring and the emotive voaclizations of Brent Cerny were highlights for me.
My thanks to all in Five Man Trio, Towncrier and Oxygen for their gracious hospitality and access before, during and after the show. Also (as always) to JJ and the best bar staff in the land!

Fallen with Nuna : (2006-02-18) Lots of crowd shots tonight...and why not? Everyone was psyched from the get-go for Nuna and the debut performance of Fallen. Nuna could very quickly become one of my favorite acts. I'd never seen them before and they came on firing on all cylinders. Very grungy. I liked the fact that - both lyrically and musically - they had this very sad, melancholy feel to their songs that at the same time expressed a hope and optimism that was very uplifting at the same time. Johnny Diaz: Thunderous drums. Nuna Minch: One of the most emotive players and vocalists I've heard in a while. Anya Minch: The kind of bass player I like - a player who knows what she feels with an incredibly sexy stalking of the stage. An act that is going to become a regular on my "must see" list, for sure. Next came Fallen: Gary Wortham on vocals and acoustic guitar, Gary Wesley on guitar, Vic Thompson on bass and Eric Langdon on the drums. I'd heard that these guys had gotten together to form a band and I had been looking forward to this debut for months...they didn't disappoint! Melodious-metal meets hip-hop meets industrial to form a sound that excites me like I haven't been for quite a while. You shouldn't miss these guys. I have a feeling there's gonna be quite a buzz about them very soon.

All Envy Aside with Abstract Thought : (2006-02-04 McAuliffe's Pub) One of the pleasures of working at McAuliffe's Pub would be the opportunity it affords me to see acts I've never seen before. Such is the case again this night as I was treated to a double bill of alternative rock in the form of All Envy Aside and Abstract Thought. Abstract opened the evening with a racous set of alt-tunage. I must say, I was very impressed with these guys...well crafted songs, great playing and vocals. I was especially blown away by guitarist Ricky. The man can handle an axe. Featured was a very nice rendition of STP's "Interstate Love Song". All Envy Aside hit the stage running and turned in a very high energy set. They had my toes tapping, which really makes it hard to take photos, let me tell ya. Again, mostly well crafted originals, but I have to admit that the highlight for me was when they broke into "Satisfaction" by the Stones and singer Amanda Tvedt stepped into the crowd for an up close and personal vocal performance. All in all, a very fun night.

We just finished discussing photography (he's an old-school darkroom guy...I'm jealous) in between sets and then, he turns around and has me laughing out loud over this funny little kinda-sorta about photography song to start his second set. Tonight's entertainment was provided by Kopecky and special guests Strange Land.
